Have you wondered if the hair colour you have been having is right for you?

In this article we discuss colour suitability, budget and long term vision for your hair colour.

Nature can tell you

Nature combined with our own inner instinct about how we feel when we see ourselves in the mirror will tell us when we may need to change.

Traditionally we tend to go a deeper more solid colour in winter then ,when spring arrives everybody wants to go lighter and to break up their colour more to make it look diffused.

The elements have quite an effect on, not only quality and strength of the hair but also colour durability plus, the ability of the natural melanin within the hairs cortex to reflect our genetic colour.

In winter we are in doors more, we eat differently; our skin is oilier so naturally the hair remains darker. In summer we are outdoors more, walking in sunlight, swimming in pools and the ocean eating lighter so hair begins to naturally lighten up.

The grey ‘racing stripe’

When the regrowth starts to appear and that grey line gets more noticeable then you know you have to rush off and get it done.

Once the grey is hidden we feel younger, more confident and ready to face the world.

But have you ever stopped to wonder if it is the correct colour choice and if, from time to time your hair colour may need to be tweaked.

Colouring FAQ

I have had the same colour on my hair for years but it seems to be getting darker and dull. Why is this?

This is caused by colour build up; if you keep taking the colour through to the ends every time it is applied then it will build up and go darker and loose shine. It is important to observe the needs of the ends of the hair EVERY TIME it gets colored.

Color fades quicker in summer so the ends may need to be refreshed but not so in winter as there is less wear and tear.

Hair colour is expensive, why can’t I do it at home?

You may get away with doing simple roots touch up at home but you cannot get yourself out of trouble if things go pear shaped when coloring

If budget is an issue I strongly suggest you get a proper colour done by an expert salon. To establish the correct tone for your skin, the right base and the right reflect.

Once this is established then you can maintain it simply by getting the regrowth attended to at one of the many COLOR ONLY salons. Any major changes should be done with lots of care and consideration by an expert.

I want to grow my colour out but I am scared. How do I handle colour growing out?

It can be a hard thing to let go and let some of the grey come through hair but remember it’s what nature intended so at some point, even if the grey stays hidden the hair does need to become lighter, no point trying to fight natural process!

What if I hate it?

No worries you can race back to the security of your regrowth touch up but you may now be able to get away with, what is called, a hairline tint.

This is a refresher colour around the front hair line and along the parting. An ideal way to get extra millage out of your colours.

Tips for colouring services

Letting go gradually

It’s important that you and your hairstylist/colorist have a plan in mind as to how the hair will be managed and the best way is to gradually ,over time, let the colour naturally fade up a few shades.

The upside of this is that the regrowth becomes less prominent as the there is less contrast.

By putting in a few subtle hi lights this will diffuse the appearance and take the emphasis off the gray as it becomes more camouflaged.

Let a little gray see the light of day

Once the base has lifted and the contrast is less extreme then you will find that there is less urgency to hide the grey as they are no longer as prominent.

At some point you and your colorist may decide to NOT do what is called a global all over colour and replace this with a combination of high and low lights so then the grey that is exposed just becomes another aspect of the overall effect.

Make sure there is a plan in place

If you stylist/colorist is not providing you with good direction and maintenance of your colors then it’s time to find someone who is willing to .

It is really important to have a long term plan in mind with some sort of eventual result to be achieved in the future.

Once that is in place you can feel more confident that your colour choice is correct and that it both flatters you and compliments your lifestyle.
